Many people suffer from binge drinking yet they have no idea of what it is. Binge drinking can be said to be a situation that arises from repetitively taking alcohol that is above the standard blood alcohol concentration of about 0.08grams. This mostly occurs in people above the age of 25 as they have both the time and money. It is how people end up being abusers of alcohol even without knowing it. Drinks like beer and wine will often have less alcohol content than distilled spirits. A drink of beer can therefore not have the same effect as a drink of whiskey. Measuring how much a drink is in these categories is as follows;
- For wine, a fifth of an oz.
- For beer- a twelfth of an oz.
- For distilled spirits- about half of an oz.

Binge drinking affects one in many ways, both physically and emotionally. Some of the most common effects include;
- Impaired judgment leading to intentionally causing harm to oneself and to others
- Sexual abuse leading to unwanted pregnancies and transmission of Sexually Transmitted Infections
- Alcohol poisoning
- Liver complications
- Pregnancy complications
- Birth of deformed babies
- Cardiovascular problems
How to prevent binge drinking
If you realize that you are a victim of binge drinking, the best way to tackle it is by reducing your intake of alcohol. It is quite obvious that you cannot just stop taking alcohol at once. If you used to take at least 6 glasses of beer, try taking 5 the next time you are at a bar.
To add onto that, it is advisable that you drink on more days than focusing your drinking to perhaps just a weekend. So instead of waiting till Friday to drink 2 bottles of wine by yourself, you could probably opt to take a glass for at most 4 days in a week. This way you give your body time to process that alcohol. You will even realize that you end up taking less alcohol using this method.
How you drink is also important as it contributes to this condition. Alcoholics who drink plain alcohol like that are likely to become drunk quickly and eventually develop a dependence on it. Before you drink, ensure that you have eaten well. Moreover, as you drink, take breaks and drink plenty of water during those breaks.
